Earthquakes

The term ‘tsunami’ is just a geographical name in the books for most of us in past 5 years. We have no specific concept about it. We start to insight its power when it swept several countries in South Asia at the end of 2004. Nowadays, when there is an earthquake, everyone will concern about is there followed by tsunami.

On 27th February 2010, magnitude 8.8 earthquakes took place in a South American country, Chile (Santiago). After the earthquake in Chile, Chile’s President Michelle Bachelet has said that the earthquake might provoke the big waves, but it would not lead to the extent of the tsunami. However, the fact proves her wrong! The pacific tsunami warning centre which located in Hawaii issued the tsunami warning to all the Pacific Rim at once.

Strong earthquakes in Haiti and Chile have shocked the world. It is followed by a 6.4-magnitude earthquake rocked southern Taiwan on 4th March 2010, Thursday morning. Many have doubts that is it just a rumour or 2012 is real? Earthquakes issue has caused concern of the world. In year 2010, there are frequent earthquakes happened all around the world, and the experts even have warned that the next one will be the United States.

There are few questions come across my mind.

  1. After the horrific earthquake in Haiti, Chile and Taiwan, there are calls everywhere for people to help, includes many organisations and union calling for volunteers as well as text donations. It is really glad to see such an outpouring of love and help for the troubled nation. This desperately needed emergency and medical aid will certainly make a huge impact on the lives of the victims. But, what we can do over the long term to help them?
  2. Even though the earthquake that struck Chile was more powerful than the one that struck Port-au-Prince, Haiti, the Chilean death toll was only in the hundreds, while Haiti's was upwards of 200,000 according to estimates. Why the difference?

The Huffington Post explains,

“Chile is wealthier and infinitely better prepared, with strict building codes, robust emergency response and a long history of handling seismic catastrophes. No living Haitian had experienced a quake at home when the Jan.”
